Netta River ≈ Necko Lake ≈ Rospuda Lake ≈ Rospuda River ≈ Rospuda Valley (2 km into the Rospuda River ) ≈ return.

You will start your adventure on the Netta River, where you will admire the qualities of Augustowska nature such as picturesque boulevards. Then you will enter the Necko Lake where the shoreline of the lake is mostly covered with forest with numerous swimming areas and beaches. The lake also abounds in many species of fish.

Another body of water on the route is Lake Rospuda, or Rospuda Augustowska where the most famous place is the Goła Zośka Peninsula. The name of the peninsula is explained by a local legend: It is said that the daughter of a local forester, in love with a tsarist officer, was hanged on this peninsula for spying on Napoleonic troops for the Russians.

Overcoming the rapid curves and rocky shoals of the Rospuda River, after a while you will see the riverbed widen, forming a swampy basin occupied by peat bogs – the so-called Rospuda Valley. This is one of the most valuable peatland areas with natural, intact water relations, i.e. the peatland here maintains a constant water level, so it is not overgrown with trees and shrubs. The Rospuda Valley is protected due to the occurrence of rare species of animals and plants, including the only Polish locality of the cross honeylocust (Herminium monorchis), a plant included in the Polish Red Book of Plants. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear the cry of a white-tailed eagle or crane, and perhaps even see a wolf or deer, for which the Rospuda Valley is a migration corridor – this is where they move from the Augustow Forest and Biebrza National Park to the west.
